Peru: Traditional Herbal Medicine and Music in the Amazon and AndesThe lush vegetation of the Peruvian Amazon, together with the coastal regions and the Andean mountains, is an ecological treasure house which may well hold the key to humankind’s future. Despite 500 years of European influence in Peru, the indigenous populations living in these regions still have an intimate knowledge of their traditional medicines.
In 1997, the EthnoMedicine Preservation Project and the Isula Biological Preserve in the Amazon Basin of Peru co-sponsored a cross-cultural exchange between elder healers from high altitude Quechua villages of the Peruvian Andes and an elder shaman and native healers from the Amazon jungle. This resulted in a 32 minute documentary film about the EthnoMedicine Preservation Project and its role as a template for the preservation of the habitats and the medicinal plant knowledge of indigenous cultures. The film explores the ancient healing traditions of the Amazon rainforest and the Andean pueblo cultures.
